GIF vs WebP vs APNG: Best Animated Image Format

2024-12-22 5 min read

GIF: The Dinosaur That Won't Die

GIF dates from 1987 and is limited to 256 colors per frame. It supports animation and transparency (but only binary — no semi-transparency). Despite these limitations, GIF is universally supported: every browser, app, messaging platform, and social network handles GIFs. The format's cultural dominance as 'reaction images' ensures it stays relevant despite being technically inferior.

WebP Animation: The Modern Choice

Animated WebP supports millions of colors, alpha transparency, and both lossy and lossless compression. Google reports animated WebP files are 64% smaller than comparable GIFs for lossy and 19% smaller for lossless. Browser support is now universal. The main limitation: platform support outside browsers. Many messaging apps, forums, and social platforms still expect GIFs.

APNG: The PNG That Moves

APNG (Animated PNG) is essentially a PNG file with multiple frames. It supports full 24-bit color and smooth alpha transparency. Quality is excellent — far better than GIF. File sizes are larger than WebP but smaller than equivalent GIFs for images with many colors. All major browsers support APNG. It's popular for high-quality animated stickers (Telegram uses APNG).

File Size Comparison

A typical 3-second animation at 320×240 pixels: GIF = ~1.5 MB. Animated WebP (lossy) = ~400 KB. Animated WebP (lossless) = ~1.2 MB. APNG = ~1.8 MB. For longer or larger animations, the differences grow dramatically. A 10-second 720p animation can be 50+ MB as a GIF but under 5 MB as lossy WebP.

Which Should You Use?

For sharing on social media and messaging: GIF (maximum compatibility, everyone expects and understands GIFs). For your own website: Animated WebP or embedded video (MP4 is even smaller than WebP for animations). For high-quality stickers or overlays: APNG (best quality with transparency). For anything longer than 5 seconds: use actual video (MP4/WebM) — animated image formats aren't designed for long content.
