How to Compress Video for WhatsApp (Under 16 MB)

WhatsApp's File Size Limits

WhatsApp caps video file sizes at 16 MB on most platforms (Android, iOS, Web). That's roughly 90 seconds of good-quality 720p video or about 3 minutes at lower quality. If your video exceeds this limit, WhatsApp will either refuse to send it or aggressively compress it, destroying quality. It's much better to compress it yourself where you control the trade-offs.

The Quick Fix

Upload your video to CocoConvert's video compressor. Select WhatsApp-optimized settings: H.264 codec, 720p resolution, and a target file size under 16 MB. The compressor will adjust bitrate automatically to hit your target. Download and send — the video will look significantly better than WhatsApp's built-in compression.

Tips for Smaller Videos

Trim the video to include only the important part — every second saved is hundreds of KB. Lower the resolution from 1080p to 720p (WhatsApp downscales anyway). Reduce the frame rate from 60fps to 30fps — imperceptible for most content. For screen recordings and talking-head videos, you can push the bitrate lower since there's less motion.

Alternative: Send as Document

WhatsApp lets you send files as documents (tap the paperclip → Document) with a limit of 2 GB. This bypasses the 16 MB video limit and prevents WhatsApp from re-compressing your video. The recipient can open it in their default video player. The trade-off: there's no inline preview in the chat.

iPhone Tip: Change Recording Settings

If your iPhone videos are consistently too large for WhatsApp, go to Settings → Camera → Record Video and switch from 4K to 1080p or 720p. You can also enable 'High Efficiency' (HEVC) which produces smaller files. This solves the problem at the source and saves phone storage too.
