How to Open WebP Files in Photoshop

2024-12-12 3 min read

Check Your Photoshop Version

Adobe added native WebP support in Photoshop 23.2 (February 2022). If you're on this version or newer, WebP files should open normally — just double-click or use File → Open. If it doesn't work, Photoshop might need an update. Go to Help → Updates to check.

Older Photoshop Versions

Running Photoshop CS6 or an older CC version? WebP won't open natively. You have two options: install the WebPShop plugin (free, from Google's GitHub) or convert the WebP file to PNG or JPG before opening. The plugin is the cleaner solution if you work with WebP files frequently.

Quick Convert If You're in a Hurry

If you just need to open one WebP file quickly, convert it to PNG first using CocoConvert. PNG preserves exact quality (lossless), so you won't lose anything. Open the PNG in Photoshop, make your edits, and save in whatever format you need. Takes about 10 seconds.
